Job Application Guidelines
There are two ways to get job applications:
-
During an office or plant site visit. This is the more common method.
-
Online. Print a copy to take with you on any office or plant visit.
A job application is an important part of your employment record. Take the time to complete it carefully and accurately. Any distortions or false information can cause your termination should you later be employed.
Here are some important application guidelines to follow:
-
Fill out the application completely and accurately — make sure that all of the entries are completed.
-
Fill in all of the requested information, including precise employment dates. Do not add “refer to resume’” or similar terms.
-
Indicate your exact current salary. Do not leave off or inflate, because this information is often verified. Although many applicants hesitate to provide this information, they should note that companies are trying to determine a salary range to offer them, usually with an increase beyond their current salary as an incentive to join the company. Most companies will try to treat you fairly.
-
Indicate your desired salary as “negotiable“ rather than indicating an amount. Do not leave it blank however. If you are later asked to give a figure, quote a salary that is 5-10% higher than your current base salary, a common average start.
-
References: The application will ask for names and contact numbers for references and permission to contact them. There is nothing unusual about this request. Sign where indicated. Also request that your current employer not be contacted if you are currently employed and wish to avoid having your job search revealed.
-
Obtain the application ahead of time and complete it before any interview or office/plant visit. If this is not possible, offer to complete it later and mail it to them. If you do so, make sure to complete it promptly to avoid having the process delayed.
