Phone Interview Tips

Preparation:
  • Do research on the company and industry to understand any issues they face.
  • Understand why the position is open; identify what its key elements are and what opportunities they present you.
  • Keep your resume in front of you, to be able to answer any interviewer about it.
  • Convey enthusiasm and interest in the position by the tone of your voice; ask well thought-out questions.
  • Try to give complete answers to the interviewer’s questions, expanding where necessary.
  • Don’t raise the topics of salary or other benefits at the initial interview.

“Why did you leave your last job?”

It’s likely the question of your leaving your last job will come up. Be prepared with both personal and professional reasons. Focus on what you’re looking for in a new position instead of what you’re leaving.


“Tell me about Yourself”

Be prepared to give a two-minute summary of your career when asked to describe yourself. Highlight any career growth, increase in responsibilities, significant achievements.


Your Questions

Be prepared with a list of thoughtful questions for your interviewer. Write them down before the call.


The Next Step?

Make sure to ask about the next step. Will they contact you? At the end of the phone interview, if you are still interested in the position then ask for an in-person interview: it shows initiative.
